Protests intensify

Published

As Friday prayers ended yesterday, the protesters came out on to the streets in even greater numbers than before. The authorities responded with live ammunition. Seventy-five people are said to be dead with hundreds more injured; the worst casualties were in the city of Hom.

The protests came the day after President al-Assad had approved the scrapping of the emergency law and abolished state security courts. These measures do not appear to have worked and the protesters are now calling for the president to go.
