Rebels capture key town

Published

Rebels say they have captured the strategically important town of Maaret al-Numan. The town lies on the main M5/M45 highway between Damascus, Homs and Aleppo in the north. If the reports are true then this has cut off the main supply route for government troops into the commercial city in the north and will strengthen the position of the rebels fighting there.

In other news the Turkish authorities forced a Syrian Airlines passenger jet to land at Ankara’s Esenboga International Airport on Wednesday. The Turkish authorities say the plane contained munitions and other materials destined for the Syrian military authorities. The incident has sparked a further war of words between the two governments. The plane was inbound to Syria from Russia.
