Reconstruction minister resigns

Published

Japans Reconstruction Minister, Ryu Matsumoto, has resigned after just one week in the job. His resignation was caused because of language he is said to have used whilst visiting survivors of the 11th March earthquake and tsunami. Japanese newspapers have described his remarks as patronising, overbearing and abusive.

He is likely to be replaced by Senior Vice Minister Tatsuo Hirano. This will, of course, add further pressure on Prime Minister Naoto Kan to resign sooner rather than later.
