Russians protest

Published

An estimated 100,000 Russians turned out to protest against President Putin yesterday. Although the government has taken an increasingly hard line against illegal protests, they have not been able to stop legitimate protesters turning out in very large numbers.

Three protest leaders had their houses searched and they were interrogated in what appears to have been a move to dampen down the rallies; if anything the tactic appears to have backfired as more people came on to the streets.

Former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov also attended the protests which called for the president to step down.
