Saleh accepts Gulf mediation

Published

President Ali Abdullah Saleh has welcomed the offer of mediation by Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) in the current standoff with anti-government protesters.

However, representatives of the opposition group, the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP), have said that they have already offered a paper on a transition and that Saleh must handover power soon. There are more vibrant voices who say that Saleh must go immediately before any negotiations can take place with the government.

Yemen is different to most of the other regional countries going through transition in that they do have a functioning parliament and opposition parties, although the country has been run by the president and a small group around him.
