Ali Abdullah Saleh, the president of Yemen for 33 years finally departed for the United States yesterday. Leaving with members of his family, Saleh will seek further treatment for injuries suffered by a rocket attack last year.
A spokesperson for the Yemeni government said that the former president was not expected to return prior to the presidential election on 21st February.
The departure of the ex president will ease tensions somewhat in the country, although in the interim period there has been an upsurge of al-Qaeda supported tribal activity which threatens to bring further insecurity. The crisis has also led to severe food shortages.
