Sochi Olympics start today

The Sochi Winter Olympics, dubbed in Russia as “Olympiada Vladimirovna” or Vladimir’s daughter will start today with the traditional grand opening and go on until 23rd February with 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines being held throughout the Games.

The Olympics will go ahead under unprecedented levels of security after a series of terrorist attacks in Russia in recent weeks. A number of world leaders including President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande and many Ministers from other countries will not be attending. Many delegations are sending gay and lesbian representatives in protest at anti-gay laws passed in Russia over the past year.

The games have cost around £31 billion ($51 billion) to put on and have angered many local residents for the way in which they have been displaced in order to make way for brand new stadiums.
