State of Emergency to be lifted

The Syrian cabinet today approved draft legislation for the lifting of the state of emergency which has been in existence since 1963.

The Emergency Law restricts public gatherings and allows the arrest of anyone suspected of threatening state security. The law also allows for surveillance and interrogation of an individual as well as control of the content of newspapers and other media.
