Thousands attend president’s funeral

Many thousands of people are reported to have attended the funeral of President Malam Bacai Sanhá which took place yesterday. The president died whilst undertaking treatment in a Paris hospital on 9th January.

The parliament’s speaker and interim president, Raimundo Pereira, called on citizens to show patriotism and tolerance as the county prepares for a presidential election which must take place within 60 days.

Reuters reports the interim president as saying “I urge all Bissau-Guineans to show patriotism and tolerance, to make of Guinea-Bissau a haven of peace, well-being and brotherhood.”
