UN General Assembly gives seat to NTC

Published

The United Nations general Assembly yesterday gave the seat in the Assembly to the National Transitional Council. The vote was 114 in favour to 17 against with 15 abstentions.

The vote means that the NTC is now officially recognised by the United Nations and will represent the country in the Assembly. As a result of this vote we have changed the Libyan flag used on our website to that of the NTC flag. The formal name of the country has also been amended from the former Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya back to its original name of Libya.

For now the no fly zone remains in place but the Libyan national airline will be allowed to fly. In a separate move, the Security Council partially lifted financial sanctions from some areas of the economy and a partial removal of the arms embargo was also agreed.
