Unemployment falls

Published

The unemployment rate fell from 8.1% to 7.8% in September with an extra 114,000 jobs being created in the month.

The fall was good news for incumbent president Barack Obama after the first presidential election debate on Wednesday which most observers say he lost and Mitt Romney the Republican candidate won.

The debate had given the Romney campaign a much needed boost and it looked as though Obama had been put on the back foot. The unemployment figures will have helped Obama, but they still remain some of the highest unemployment figures with only higher figures in the mid-1980s in the recent past.
