Unity government to be formed

Published

Late yesterday the opposition leader Antonis Samaras of New Democracy agreed to join a unity government. Incumbent prime minister George Papandreou agreed to stand down to allow a unity government to be formed. Details of the new government will be released today.

Meanwhile, a statement from the finance ministry late last night said that 19th February 2012 would be the ‘most appropriate’ date for a general election.

Samaras has been calling for a general election for weeks and this was probably part of the deal reached to secure a unity government. The new government will have the task of passing legislation to enact the latest Eurozone bailout deal of €130 billion and ensure that the next tranche of €9 billion is paid over to Greece.
