Vaclav Havel dies

Published

In normal circumstances we would not report on the death of a politician unless it had a potentially significant effect upon the future politics of a country. However, today we report with sadness of the death of Vaclav Havel (75), the former president of the Czech Republic.

I was privileged to have met the former dissident and writer who led the then Czechoslovakia away from Communism and towards democracy. At the time I was working on the first democratic elections in Czechoslovakia. I remember him as a calm, slightly shy or reserved man who had simply stood up for what he believed. But it was his strength of character and belief in what he was doing that gave so much strength to so many people.

A gentle but strong man who will be sadly missed by his people and remains a beacon to present day politicians about how to conduct themselves in politics.
