Violence escalates

Following weeks of stalemate, the protests to get rid of President Saleh have erupted into armed battles on the streets of Sana’a, the capital of Yemen.

The fighting is predominantly between one of the largest tribes, the Hashid, and the security forces of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The government has issued an arrest warrant for the Hashid tribal leader Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar and a number of his followers.

A number of countries including the UK and US have advised their nationals to leave the country as the situation increasingly looks like it will slide in to civil war.

At least forty people were killed in the fighting yesterday.
