VP impeached

Published

Maldives’ parliament (People’s Majlis) has voted to impeach Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor. Sixty-one of the 85 members present voted in favour of the impeachment with the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) boycotting the vote. Fifty-seven votes were needed for a successful impeachment.

Vice President Adheeb was arrested on 24th October accused of masterminding the bomb blast aboard the president’s speedboat on 28th September; the president escaped unhurt. Mr Adheeb denies any involvement and the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which was asked to investigate the explosion by the government, said it found no evidence of a bomb causing the explosion.
