Zimbabwe plans to ban raw platinum exports


Minister of Mines, Walter Chidakwa, has announced that the Zimbabwean government is about to ban the export of raw platinum and instead require producers to refine locally, according to an article in New Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is the world’s number three producer of the metal but the three main companies Anglo-American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Aquarius Platinum say that they do not produce enough platinum to make it worthwhile establishing a smelter in the country. They claim the minimum threshold is 500,000 ounces and that they were producing just 400,000 ounces in 2013.
