New constitution passed

A new constitution was passed by the Hungarian parliament yesterday (18th April 2011) with 262 votes in favour and 44 against, easily passing the two thirds vote required for constitutional change.

The constitution which has been proposed by the Fidesz led coalition which includes the Christian Democrat Party has a number of controversial clauses including freedom of the press and judicial control issues.  There have been a number of opposition led protests against the constitution which will come into effect on 1st January 2012.
