French want left to win

Published

The Liberation newspaper has published a poll suggesting that 53% of those surveyed want the left to win the next general election. Around 37% said they hoped that it would lose.

Following the fall of Dominique Strauss-Kahn over rape allegations in a hotel in New York, 47% said that they want former Socialist Party (PS) leader François Hollande to be the next president. Around 39% favour Martine Aubry (the present Socialist Party leader) and 29% want current president Nicolas Sarkozy of the Union for a Popular Movement. Other contenders for the presidency include François Bayrou of the centrist Democratic Movement on 25% and Jean-Louis Borloo of the liberal Radical Party on 22%.

The same poll shows President Nicolas Sarkozy’s popularity rating has risen by two percentage points to 36%.
