Mubarak gets life

Published

Former president Hosni Mubarak has receive a life sentence for failing to stop the killings of more than 800 protesters on 11th February 2011 at the start of the Egyptian phase of the Arab Spring. His interior minister at the time, Habib Al-Adly was also sentenced to life.

However, six former police commanders were acqiuitted of any wrong doing and the former presidents sons Gamal and Alaa had other charges dropped because they related to events more than ten years previous.

Whilst joy was the main reaction of the crowds outside the court at the sentence of the former dictator, there was outrage and violence when the crowds heard of the other sentences.

Initial reactions may not reflect later reactions, especially if the ex-president’s counsel decides to appeal the sentence.
