New opposition group formed with respected leader

Published

A new body, the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, has been formed by opposition groups in Syria in an effort to bring all different opposition and rebel groups in the country under one roof. If successful the group will supersede the Syrian National Council which has failed to achieve any of its objectives.

The new body also elected a president, Sheikh Ahmad Moaz al-Khatib, a respected figure in the country and former Imam of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. He has no links with the Muslim Brotherhood or other Islamist parties and is seen as a genuine independent.

The key job of the new coalition will be to try and bring all of the fighting groups under one authority including the Free Syrian Army.
