Syria

Regional attempts to intervene

Published

Another weekend, another pile of deaths in the cities of Syria. Meanwhile Nabil el-Araby, the head of the Arab League, a 22 country strong body has presented a 10 point plan to Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad which includes the withdrawal of the troops from Syrian cities and a speeding up of reforms. The SANA news agency suggests that Assad has agreed to the reforms plan.

Meanwhile another regional body, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has called for an ‘immediate end to the killing machine’ according to Al Jazeera. Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad has called on Syria to ‘back away’ from the ‘violent crackdown’.

All of this seems lost on the protesters who continue to mass on the streets and called their protests last Friday the ‘Friday for International Protection’. Few protesters appear convinced that the violence will end and most want Assad to go.
