Argentina

Kirchner wins easily

Published

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was the clear winner in Argentina’s primary which took place yesterday.

Kirchner of the Front for Victory (FPV) took around 49.3% of the vote. Her closest rival, Ricardo Alfonsín of the Radical Civic Union (UCR) took 13.3% and former president Eduardo Duhalde of the Justicialist Party was third with 12.1%.

The poll, which was compulsory, has been seen by many in Argentina as a large opinion poll for the main candidates. If the figures are carried through to the main poll on 23rd October then Kirchner will be re-elected on the first round vote with no need for a runoff.
