Southern Sudan votes

Published

Today is day two of the referendum in Southern Sudan to determine whether it remains part of Sudan or secedes to form a new nation.

The vote will take place over seven days, ending next Sunday and the results will not be known for around four weeks.  Southern Sudan is about the size of Spain and Portugal but with very few roads.

All the press reports so far would suggest a heavy poll in favour of separation.

Even after the vote, the oil rich region of Abyei will still be in dispute.  Sudan’s President Bashir has said that the North will not give up the region.
