Yes vote in referendum

Published

Around 64% of Ecuadorian voters have supported the changes proposed in a referendum put to them by President Rafael Correa.

In total there were ten questions covering a wide range of subjects from reform of the judiciary to prohibiting sports where animals are killed, such as cockfighting and bullfighting as well as banning casinos and gambling.

Some opponents were unhappy with questions that sought to limit the media and financial services. One question asked if media owners and their shareholders should be prohibited from holding stocks in any companies outside that industry. A similar question was based upon the financial services.

The judicial reforms could, in effect, give the president the powers via surrogates to have a say over judicial appointments.

Across the board Ecuadorians voted on each question with yes votes around 64%. The referendum took place on Saturday 7th May.
