Agriculture minister sacked

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has sacked his agriculture minister and four provincial governors for a poor grain harvest. Last week the governor and officials in another province were praised for meetings their grain targets and were given cars.

Minister for Agriculture Merdan Bayramov has been replaced by Rejep Bazarov, one of his deputies.

Other officials in the sector were also replaced. The wheat harvest this year fell 25% short of the 1.6 million tonne state target which has caused prices of bread to increase threefold.
