Bakytzhan Sagintayev appointed Prime Minister

Published

President Nursultan Nazarbayev has moved Prime Minister Karim Massimov from the post of prime minister to chairman in charge of the country’s National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NSC or KNB).

Although the move has been described as a demotion by a number of western observers it does have the value of being largely out of the public eye and the Chairman of the KNB is both a powerful figure and only reports directly to the president.

Deputy Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev has been appointed as the prime minister and approved by deputies of the Majilis or Parliament.
