Binali Yildirim sole candidate to become Turkey’s next PM

Published

Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has chosen Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communications, Binali Yildirim, to be the sole candidate to be the new chairman of the party at this Sunday’s extraordinary congress. This means that Yildirim will also become the country’s new prime minister.

The reality is that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will have chosen the candidate who, as a close confidante of the president, is unlikely to be as challenging a prime minister as Ahmet Davutoğlu who he will replace. Unlike Davutoğlu it is thought that Binali Yildirim is unlikely to stand in the way of the president attempting to secure more powers for himself through constitutional changes.
