Business Minister resigns

Published

Romania’s Minister for Business Environment, Commerce and Entrepreneurship, Florin Jianu has resigned his portfolio over a government decree which decriminalises several corrupt practices. The minister resigned over what he called an ethical decision. The introduction of the decree, which was approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday, has led to widespread protests across the country which has seen more than 250,000 people attend street protests.

The centre-left Social Democratic Party (PSD) won the general election in December last year and went on to form a new government with the support of the centre-right Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) in early January.
