Carmelo Abela appointed Home Affairs Minister

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has appointed Carmelo Abela as the new Minister of Home Affairs and National Security. The move comes after the Prime Minister sacked Emmanuel Mallia from the role after he failed to submit his resignation as requested by the Prime Minister yesterday.

Mr Mallia was asked to resign following a shooting incident which involved his driver but for which he failed to ensure that a proper official statement was registered.

Carmelo Abela (42) has a degree from the University of Malta in Labour Studies. He started his career with Mid-Med Bank Ltd and continued with a political career when he was elected as a local councillor for the Zejtun Local Council between 1994 and 1996. He was elected to parliament in 1996 and was appointed as Assistant Whip and Treasurer of the Labour Party group. In 2003 he was made Deputy Speaker and was the party’s spokesman for Education, Youth, Sports and Culture. He is married with two children.
