Chairul Tanjung is new Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has appointed Chairul Tanjung as the new Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs. He replaces Hatta Rajasa who resigned last week to become a Vice-Presidential candidate running alongside Prabowo Subianto of the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party in the forthcoming Presidential election.

Chairul Tanjung (52) is an Indonesian businessman listed as the 18th richest person in Indonesia and is the Chairman and founder of CT Corp (Indonesia) which operates in financial services, media, lifestyle and entertainment as well as natural resources. He has a bachelor degree from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Indonesia.

He is likely to be in the job for just five months as the President’s term of office runs out in October.
