Communications minister resigns

Minister of Communications, Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi, is the first minister to resign from the current government since its formation in 2010; he did so on Monday 27th August.

The Minister stated that he wrote to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in July demanding that he stop interfering in the work of his ministry or he would resign. According to the minister the prime minister decided to accept his resignation which therefore came into force yesterday.

Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi is a member of the Al-Iraqiyah bloc. He will be replaced on a temporary basis by Dr. Torhan al-Mufti, currently Minister of State for Provincial Affairs.
