Court confirms impeachment of Park Geun-hye

South Korea’s Constitutional Court has upheld a decision by the country’s parliament to impeach President Park Geun-hye. The ruling, which removes her from office, takes immediate effect and removes her immunity to prosecution.

Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn has been acting a president since impeachment proceedings began and will remain in place until a new president is elected.

An election for a new president must be held within two months.
