Defence minister resigns

Colombia’s Defence minister, Rodrigo Rivera, has handed in his resignation following an increase in violence and kidnappings by rebels and criminal gangs.

President Juan Manuel Santos has appointed Juan Carlos Pinzon as the new Minister for Defence, whilst Rivera is heading off to Brussels to become the new Ambassador to the European Union.
