Defence Minister resigns

Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, Valeriy Heletey resigned his portfolio on Friday; the Minister had been in post since 3rd July 2014.

The formal response from President Petro Poroshenko as published on the Presidency website is as follows:

“President sustained the rapport of Defense Minister on resignation and will make a submission on the appointment of a new Defense Minister to the Parliament on Monday

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko sustained the rapport of Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey on resignation. The Head of State emphasized that the time has come to replace the board of military sector.

Petro Poroshenko noted that he was willing to make a submission on the appointment of a new Defense Minister to the Parliament on Monday. He expressed hope that his proposal would be supported at the parliamentary session of October 14. “I am sure that we will not delay the voting for the new Defense Minister. I hope that it will take place on Tuesday,” he said.

According to the President, the decision to replace the Defense Minister and a series of other staffing decisions, particularly the dismissal of the board of the State Border Service and the establishment of the Intelligence Committee headed by Ihor Smeshko, will reinforce security structures and enhance defense capacity of Ukraine.”
