Defence Minister sacked for sexist remarks

Published

Serbia’s Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vučić, has announced that he is to dismiss his defence minister for offensive remarks made on Sunday.

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić is reported as having said that he “so likes these journalists who kneel this easily” after journalist Zlatija Labović from the B92 media site kneeled down to allow cameramen to take shots of the minister during a visit to a defence company on Sunday.

Gašić immediately apologised but the prime minister is reported by B92 as saying “But an apology is not enough. We must protect all women in Serbia, it was a bad message to all women, and when I took office as the prime minister, I said Serbia will be a modern, decent country. A country where women are not insulted, where there is no machismo and sexist insults.”

No replacement has, as yet, been announced.
