Development Minister resigns

Published

Liviu Dragnea, Romania’s Minister of Administration and Regional Development, has resigned his portfolio after being found guilty of electoral fraud by the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

The Minister is facing one year’s probation for using his influence and authority to obtain electoral advantage during the 2012 referendum organised to impeach former President Traian Băsescu. Although the impeachment vote was won the turnout was below 50% and a Constitutional Court declared the vote invalid and reinstated the President.

The referendum was instigated by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of which Liviu Dragnea was General Secretary at the time.
