Egypt’s Prime Minister Shafiq resigns

The ruling military council in Egypt today announced the resignation of Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq. The statement was announced on the Armed Forces’ Facebook page.

Former transport minister, Essam Sharaf, has been asked to form a new government.  The move is considered to be a concession to demands from activisits for a caretaker government with no affiliation to the previous regime. Shafiq was seen as too closely allied with former President Hosni Mubarak.
