Environment Minister assassinated

Burundi’s Minister of Environment, Emmanuel Niyonkuru, has been shot dead as he returned home on New Year’s Eve. He is the latest victim of a period of violence following the election of President Pierre Nkurunziza for a third term in 2015 which was boycotted by the opposition.

There have been at least 450 killings according to Reuters since the presidential election along with an attempted coup d’état.
