Foreign Minister dies

Abdul Samad Abdullah, Minister for Foreign Affairs died yesterday whilst undertaking surgery for heart and kidney disease in a Singapore hospital. He has been replaced by Education Minister Asim Ahmed in an interim capacity.

The Maldives are holding presidential elections on 7th September and Abdullah was said to be a key supporter of current President Mohamed Waheed.
