French Labour Minister resigns

Published

Minister of Labour, Employment, Vocational Training and Social Dialogue, Fran├žois Rebsamen, has announced that he will stand down on 19th August.

The minister took his portfolio in April 2014 but was the Mayor of Dijon in eastern France from 2001 to 2014. On Monday he was re-elected to the Mayoral post by local councillors taking 46 votes whilst his rival took two votes and there were eleven blank votes.

He is not allowed to hold both posts and therefore had to make a choice. With unemployment standing at around 10% and refusing to fall perhaps Mayor of Dijon is a less stressful role.
