Gopinath Munde killed in car crash

Gopinathrao Munde, the Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation, has been killed in a car crash. He was appointed to his portfolio in the new government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi only a few days ago. The accident happened as the Minister was travelling to New Delhi airport to get a flight back to his home state of Maharashtra in the early hours of this morning.

The Press Information Bureau website reports the Prime Minister’s reaction as follows:

“PM grieved at the passing away of Shri Gopinath Munde

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has condoled the untimely passing away of the Union Minister for Rural Development, Shri Gopinath Munde, in a road accident this morning. Expressing his sadness and shock, the Prime Minister described Shri Gopinath Munde as a true mass leader, who rose to great heights and tirelessly served people.

Following is the text of the Prime Minister’s tweets:

“Extremely saddened & shocked by the demise of my friend & colleague Gopinath Munde ji. His demise is a major loss for the Nation & the Govt.

Gopinath Munde ji was a true mass leader. Hailing from backward sections of society, he rose to great heights & tirelessly served people.

My tributes to a dynamic leader whose premature demise leaves a void hard to fill.

Condolences to Munde ji’s family. We stand by them in this hour of grief.”
