Hatta Rajasa to resign

Hatta Rajasa, the Coordinating Minister for Economics, has announced that he is to resign his portfolio today.

The Jakarta Post reports that his decision is because he has decided to run as a Vice-Presidential candidate in the presidential election due to take place on 9th July. Hatta Rajasa is Chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN) and is likely to run as the Vice-Presidential candidate to Prabowo Subianto who is standing as the Presidential candidate for the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra). The two parties recently reached an agreement to form an alliance for the presidential election.

The newspaper reports that; “Based on Law no. 42/2008, an active state official or minister must retire from his or her position if they want to run for the presidency or vice presidency”.
