Hovik Abrahamyan appointed Prime Minister

President Serzh Sargsyan has appointed Hovik Abrahamyan as the next Prime Minister of Armenia. He replaces Tigran Sargsyan who resigned last week.

Hovik Abrahamyan (56) was Speaker of the National Assembly before his new appointment. A member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) worked in the private sector until 1996 when he was elected Mayor of Artashat in the Ararat Province in the east of the country. He became governor of Ararat Province in 1998 and Minister of Territorial Administration in 2000 where he stayed until he was elected Speaker in 2008.
