Uttama Savanayana, the Minister of Information and Communication Technology has resigned his post following the decision by the government to establish a new ministry called the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.

The Bangkok Post reports that the new ministry will take over all functions of the old ministry except for the National Disaster Warning Center which will now come under the Interior Ministry.

The Government Public Relations Department reports that “The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology announced that the cabinet has officially approved two plans on the “digital economy” and “digital government” for the next three years. The digital economy is the first phase of the country’s 20-year “digital Thailand” plan which aims to enhance rural infrastructure nationwide. The second plan, for digital government, aims to improve services and move them onto a single government portal in order to encourage all government agencies to share data with one another.”

The Bangkok Post also records that the Military Prime Minister, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, is likely to assign Deputy Prime Minister Prajin Juntong to the interim post until the new ministry is operational.
