Interior minister resigns

Published

Interior Minister Katarina Kresal resigned on Wednesday after a Court of Audit found irregularities in the procedures used to hire offices for the new National Investigation Agency in 2010.

Her resignation had been rejected by Prime Minister Borut Pahor but Kresal resubmitted it saying that the resignation was ‘irrevocable’.

Kresal is leader of the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (LDS), the only remaining party in coalition with the Social Democrats (SD) after the Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia (DeSUS) and Zares – new politics (Zares) left the coalition in May and June.

The current government has 34 MPs in the 90 seat National Assembly. The next elections are due in October 2012.
