Irakli Garibashvili named as new Prime Minister

Published

Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has named Interior Minister Irakli Garibashvili (31) as the person to replace him as prime minister.

Ivanishvili will stand down as prime minister later this month when the whole Cabinet will resign after the inauguration of president-elect Giorgi Margvelashvili on 17th November. The ruling Georgian Dream party will then nominate a new Cabinet which will be endorsed by the new President and then go to parliament for approval.

Civil Georgia notes that Irakli Garibashvili is a close associate of the outgoing prime minister and in the eight years the interior minister worked in the private sector it was always for ‘entities affiliated with Ivanishvili and his family’.

The Georgian Times gives a more orthodox set of biographical details for the man who will become prime minister. Eurasianet has a different take on the new Prime Minister.
