Justice Minister sacked

Published

Yesterday Prime Minister Petr Nečas sacked his Justice Minister, Jiří Pospíšil for what was described as mismanagement of the ministry and its finances.

The trigger would appear to have been when the Justice Minister requested further funds of $48 million to cover the costs related to the prison service. The government is currently undergoing a major cost cutting exercise and the request for more funds may well have been seen as a move to undermine morale.

Pospíšil is a member of the prime minister’s Civic Democratic Party (ODS). The minister said that he had less than an hour’s warning of the dismissal.
