Kabimba sacked as succession battle intensifies

President Michael Sata has dismissed his Minister of Justice Wynter Kabimba and replaced him with Defence Minister Edgar Lungu. Lungu also replaces Kabimba as the Patriotic Front Party Secretary General.

President Sata has not been seen in public for months amidst growing rumours that he is seriously ill. He is due to open parliament next month and speculation has been growing about what will happen if he doesn’t attend.

The sacking is probably an attempt to quell part of a fierce succession battle which appears to be taking place within the Cabinet surrounding the rumours of the president’s ill health.

The official statement as issued by the Presidential Office is as follows:

PRESIDENT SATA FIRES KABIMBA

LUSAKA, Thursday, August 28, 2014 – His Excellency, Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata, President of the Republic of Zambia, has with immediate effect revoked the appointment of Hon. Wynter Kabimba as Minister of Justice and party Secretary General.

Hon. Edgar Lungu becomes the new party Secretary General and Minister of Justice, in addition to his portfolio as Minister of Defence.

The Head of State thanked Hon. Kabimba for the service rendered to the Government.
