Kailash Purryag named as new President

Rajkeswar (Kailash) Purryag (64) has been named as the new president of Mauritius. He replaces Anerood Jugnauth who stood down in late March to join the opposition.

Kailash Purryag (as he is better known) has been Speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius since 2005 and is a prominent member of the ruling Mauritian Labour Party (PT). An Attorney-at-law he was first elected in 1976. According to Le Mauricien online between 1980 and 1982 he was Minister of Social Security. In 1984 he became Minister of Health and held the post until 1988. In 1995 he became Minister of planning, Information and telecommunications and in 1997 was made Vice-Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. He is married with one child.
