Kim Kwan-jin moves to National Security Office whilst Han Min-koo becomes Defence Minister

President Park Geun-hye has appointed Defence Minister Kim Kwan-jin to become the new head of the National Security Office. He replaces Kim Jang-soo who stood down along with Intelligence Service director Nam Jae-joon following the Sewol ferry disaster.

Han Min-koo, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has been nominated as the new Minister of Defence. Han (63) requires parliamentary approval before taking up his post. Kim (65) will stay on as Defence Minister until Han is approved but he does not need parliamentary approval for his new post and will start work immediately according to the presidential spokesperson.
